Shipping articulated lorries places special demands on logistics and planning. Companies are faced with the choice between different shipping methods, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we look at the shipping of tractor units with regard to the roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) and flatrack methods and show how these two methods are suitable for different requirements.

Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping for tractor units

RoRo shipping of tractor units makes it possible to drive the vehicles directly onto the ship. This method is generally suitable for all vehicle types, even for large quantities.

Advantages of RoRo shipping from tractor units:

  • Efficient handling: RoRo enables fast loading and unloading, which speeds up the shipping of articulated lorries.
  • Cost-effective for standard sizes: Ideal for standard-sized tractor units, but also for all other lorry models.
  • Reduced risk of damage: The risk of transport damage is minimised by the gentle loading method and loading below deck.

Disadvantages of RoRo shipping:

  • Port availability: RoRo shipping is only offered in selected ports, which can limit flexibility.
  • The departure density is lower.

Flatrack shipping of tractor units

With flatrack shipping, the tractor unit is loaded and secured on an open, flat container. This method is particularly ideal for tractor units, as at least 2 units can be combined on one container.

Advantages of flatrack shipping of tractor units:

  • Increased port availability: The flatrack method can be used in a larger number of ports, even where RoRo sailings are not available. In addition, the departure density is much higher.
  • Individual securing: Vehicles can be specifically secured for transport to ensure stability during shipping.

Disadvantages of flatrack shipping:

  • More cost-intensive: Due to the additional security and special equipment, flatrack shipping can be more expensive.
  • Longer preparation time: Correctly securing and preparing the vehicles can take longer. In addition, the containers have to be moved and returned later.
  • Higher risk of damage: As the vehicle has to be moved or lifted more often.
  • Loading below deck not guaranteed.

Which method to choose for shipping articulated lorries?

The decision between RoRo and flatrack shipping of tractor units depends on specific requirements, such as time and budget. By carefully analysing the advantages and disadvantages of these methods, companies can find the optimal solution for the international shipment of tractor units.
